Our Story
The Newmarket Nighthawks were created to make hockey accessible for players with developmental disabilities—so every player can take part in a program built around their unique strengths, needs, and pace. Mainstream hockey often doesn’t fully support the social and physical needs of these athletes, so our club exists to fill that gap and create a place where everyone belongs on the ice.
We started with just a few players who shared one simple thing: a desire to play hockey. That spirit still drives us today. There are no tryouts and no skill requirements to join. Players learn fundamentals like skating, stickhandling, passing, and shooting—at their own pace, with encouragement every step of the way.
Who Can Join?
The program is open to male and female players ages 8 and up. We’re supported by a strong community of volunteers, including extra help for players who need more hands-on support.
How the program Works
Our program is organized by skill level (not age or gender) so players can learn and grow in an environment that fits them best. We offer beginner, intermediate, and senior groupings based on individual ability.
Players take part in practices and games, adapted to what each athlete can do. Our top priorities are:

Come Visit Us!
New players and families are welcome to visit the Magna Centre on Saturdays between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to watch, participate, and see whether the Nighthawks are the right fit.
